We are orthodox in our beliefs and liberal in our love. Within the Presbyterian Church (USA) we are members of the Fellowship of Presbyterians, whose mission is to “build flourishing churches that make disciples of Christ.”
The Bible is God’s Word to us. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the final authority of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error [infallible & inerrant]. (2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:20,21, Psalm 119:105)
There is only one sovereign God, creator of heaven and earth and therefore ruler of the universe. He has existed eternally in three personalities; Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. (Genesis 1:1, 26, 27; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; 1 Peter 1:2)
Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He was born of the Virgin Mary and lived a sinless life. Apart from Christ, all people are spiritually lost and because of sin, deserve the judgment of God. However, Jesus offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on the cross. Three days after Jesus Christ was crucified and died, He physically arose from the dead to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to heaven and will return again someday to overcome Satan and evil and reign forever. (Matthew 1:22, 23, Isaiah 9:6, John 1:1-5, 14:10-30, Hebrews 4:14-15, 1 Corinthians 15:3,4, Colossians 1:15-23)
The Holy Spirit, third person of the Trinity, is present in the world to make people aware of their sin and draws people to Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living Christ-like lives, understanding of spiritual truth and guidance in doing what is right. He gives every believer a spiritual gift [ability] when they are saved so they can serve the church and reach out to a lost and needy world. (2 Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13, 14:16, 17; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 3:16, Ephesians 1:13, 5:18, Galatians 5:25)
Salvation is God’s free gift to us but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin through personal goodness or self-improvement. Only by humbly admitting our sin and trusting in Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin’s penalty. When we turn from our self-ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith we are saved. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Christ into his/her life by faith. (Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6; Titus 3:5, Galatians 3:26, Romans 5:1)
The Church. All believers are members of the body of Christ, the one true church universal. Spiritual unity is to be expressed among Christians by acceptance and love of one another across ethnic, cultural, national socioeconomic, generational, gender and denominational lines.
The local church is a congregation of believers who gather for worship, prayer, instruction, encouragement, mutual accountability and community with each other. Through it, believers invest time, energy, and resources to fulfill the Great Commission – to reach lost people and grow them into fully devoted followers of Christ. (Acts 2:42-47, 1 Corinthians 12:12, 27, Ephesians 1:22-23, Colossians 3:11, Galatians 3:28, Matthew 28:18-20.)
Eternity. People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is hell. To be eternally in union with Him is heaven. Heaven and hell are real places of eternal existence. (John 3:16, 14:17, Romans 6:23, 8:17-18, 2 Corinthians 2:7-9)
