How to begin having “God Time” consistently

1/29/2018

For some of you, creating a new habit of consistently spending time reading the Bible and praying may be something you’ve tried to establish multiple times in your life, to no avail.
Set a reasonable goal. If you’re beginning for the first time, set a goal to spend 5-7 minutes a day. This includes reading and praying. If the amount of time seems possible, you’re more likely to be successful.

Pick a time when you are likely to be consistent. Think through your day and look for time you have not yet considered, like waking up a few minutes early or going to bed a few minutes later than normal. There may be other time in your day that you can capture and turn into “God Time.”

Pick a place where you can have quiet and focus. You may have to be creative, but finding a place that is free of distractions is important. Spend some time thinking seriously about how you can make this time free of distractions: such as your phone, tv, or even your family.

Stay consistent so it becomes a habit. Google “how to form a habit” and you’ll likely see many things that suggest consistency is key. Don’t allow yourself to skip a day or you’ll quickly find that you aren’t making a habit. Instead, be persistent in making this time a priority and it will soon be something that is just part of your day, like brushing your teeth or checking Social Media.

Tell someone. Setting up accountability will make a huge difference in your motivation when you have days when you’re tempted not to. Have someone ask you how you’re time with God is going so that it helps keep you on track.

Reward yourself. Weekly set ways to reward yourself for staying on track with your time with God. Yes, spending time with God is full of rewards on its own, but it can be helpful to reward yourself with something you value: a specialty coffee or other “treat.” This will serve to encourage you.

We at Peace Church are praying for you. We are praying that God will use this to be the time you connect with God’s Word in a new and fresh way. We pray that the Holy Spirit of God will open your mind and your heart and grant you an understanding of His Word and guide you to applying it your life. Our Pastor and staff here at Peace are here for you. So, along your journey, please contact us and let us know how we can help.
