“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved… For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? Romans 10:9-10,14
Jesus death on the cross was and is sufficient payment for the penalty every human has incurred because of sin. The apostle Paul's question in this verse, however, is logical. He asks, "What is the possibility that someone would ask another being for help if they didn't believe that that being could actually help them?" To call on someone, one must believe in that person, and to "believe" in that person, one has to trust them. As Paul asks, how can they call if they haven't believed? Ask God to give you more understanding in this truth today as you meditate on this verse. What must first be true in order to call upon Jesus for salvation?
